Life is unpredictable. We face hardships that often make it difficult to stay positive. Whether it’s a financial loss or the loss of our loved ones, everyone goes through tough times. And, it might become difficult to stay positive when there’s a never-ending cycle of depressing news. Additionally, the stress of our day to day lives makes it challenging to stay happy.
The Importance of Being Positive
More often than not, we’re juggling 100s of things at once. You might even start feeling hopeless and unhappy. However, you need to work towards finding ways to be happy and stay positive.
Happiness has numerous benefits such as a healthier lifestyle, better inter-personal relationships, increased longevity among other things. Therefore, it’s best we find ways to stay positive.
5 Powerful Ways to Stay Positive
Here are some of my favorite ways to stay positive. They’re incredibly easy and will help you change your mindset.
#1. Understand Yourself
If you truly want to be positive, you need to understand yourself. Take some time off and focus on your needs. What do you want in life? What does happiness mean to you?
Answering such questions is the first step to understanding yourself. Pay attention to your emotions. Also, note how you react to the things that stress you.
By being aware of yourself, you’ll be able to prevent your emotions from negatively impacting your life. For instance, incorporate self-care activities that work for you. Doing so will help you think optimistically and make you better, rational decisions.
#2. Have a Healthy Routine

You’ll be surprised by how you feel more positive when you have a healthy routine.
Get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods and exercise every day. These things sound simple because they’re the simplest ways to stay positive!
Your ability to stay happy increases, your relationships and work performance improves.
#3. Try Humour
A little lightheartedness or humour adds positivity to your life. It’s important to have fun and laugh even when you’re facing a challenge.
Sometimes, recognizing the humour in a stressful situation can brighten your outlook. Read a funny book or watch a comedy movie to help you feel better.
This is an excellent way to get you out of the negative zone. When you take a break and let your mind off the negative situation, you allow yourself to feel other emotions that help you feel better.
For instance, you might feel betrayed by your colleague. Instead of staying angry, watch a funny sitcom. Doing so will help you focus on something other than your colleague. After a while, you will notice that you no longer feel as angry or betrayed as you earlier did.
#4. Practice Gratitude

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to practice gratitude. Invest in a gratitude journal to transform your life.
Don’t believe me?
Research indicates that writing down grateful thoughts improves your overall well-being and sense of optimism.
Spend a few minutes every day to write down the things that make you happy. It can be simple things such as your pet or having a balcony overlooking the beach.
Practicing gratitude is the easiest way to shift your focus to a more optimistic mindset.
#5. Avoid Negative Self-Talk
Your self-esteem begins to take a toll if you constantly think negatively of yourself.
The best way to break free of this pattern is to recognize and stop whenever you have such thoughts. Replace them by thinking of your qualities.
The Takeaway
Staying positive doesn’t come easy. It’s something you learn over time with regular practice. Start by avoiding negative self-talk and journaling.
Find new ways to incorporate joy into your life to adopt a positive thinking approach.
